Is the DJ's Equipment really that important?

So, I have wanted to write this blog for a while…a long while. Let’s just get right down to it. What equipment your Wedding DJ uses is over emphasized by Brides and DJ’s alike! I will say this – Not all DJ Gear is the same. Just like how your Honda Accord compares to a Mercedes Benz. There is High End, Middle of the Road, Entry Level and Cheap gear just like cars. This is not an article about those differences though. For this article it is important that your DJ has Professional Quality DJ Equipment. Home use consumer audio products or substandard “DJ Toys” are not acceptable.

My argument is that the Human Element is much more important than any piece of equipment that your Wedding DJ will use!

As you search for the perfect fit Wedding DJ, it is this DJ’s opinion to look for the right “personal fit” and for a DJ that has the skill-set that is important to you! Maybe you need a Wedding DJ that will make announcements and act as an event host. Maybe you will have certain music requests that need to be honored. It is possible you will need someone to motivate your guests to dance and party. Those are priorities that you and your Fiancé will have to decide on. More so than what lights “DJ A” offers or how many songs “DJ B” has.

Lets face it, equipment will only take a Wedding DJ so far. All Speakers will play music. Just like cars, some are better than others. You also see some “Craigslist DJ” say he has 50,000 / 100,000 / 1 million songs, SO WHAT! Anyone with an I-Tunes account has access to 20 + Million tracks. Furthermore DJ-ing has never been about “how many songs” it is about playing the right song at the right time! Lights are nice, but many DJ’s tend to go overboard or get them from the Halloween section at the local big box retailer. Lastly the method of how the music gets played should not be as important as people think it is. There are many choices for your Wedding DJ to choose from on how he or she plays music. CD, MP3, Vinyl, I-Pods, Laptops, Hard Drives, Etc. No matter what your DJ chooses the end result is still the same!

Equipment can only take a DJ so far. A poor Wedding DJ with great gear will still be a poor DJ. Now a highly trained professional DJ / Emcee will do a fantastic job no matter what gear he uses! When you are considering that vendor for your Big Day, make sure to look for the service that not only provides you with quality DJ equipment but more importantly fits with your priorities and vision for your Wedding!
